Hi everyone, today’s episode is a mix of memory and music.
Back in my mid-teens, my mum signed me up for a few drum lessons (I can’t remember if I expressed an interest in it, or if it was totally random!). It was about three sessions, and I quickly realised I didn’t have the energy for it.
Still, one moment stuck: my drum teacher demoed a portion of Limp Bizkit’s “Take a Look Around” and pointed out its unique rhythm. That planted a quiet seed in my young mind—that LB had talented musicians in that nu metal sound.
Shoutout to Jeremy (I think this is him: Jeremy Yeo) for that early musical insight.
At the time, I was more into Linkin Park, and LB’s sound was a bit too loud or aggressive.
But recently, I stumbled across Stewart Copeland’s jamming session to “Rollin” via Drumeo—one of my favorite YouTube channels—and it somehow led me to Wes Borland’s guitar work.
Wes is Limp Bizkit’s guitarist, while John Otto and Sam Rivers hold down the drums and bass.
UPDATE (Oct 2025): RIP Sam Rivers 💔 (passed away at age 48)
I don’t know much about electric guitars, but I do remember LB being huge when I was around 14. I’d hear “Rollin’” and “Take a Look Around” constantly, and those first two album covers were everywhere.
Re-listening now feels like a new experience, as it’s like hearing something I missed the first time around.
There’s a Wes Borland Delay Sound medley played by Maciej Still Sucks that’s especially intriguing.
It’s meditative, relaxing, and unexpectedly great for yoga background music. I only just heard tracks like “No Sex” and “Hybrid Worlds” for the first time, and I love both the instrumental and studio versions.
Thanks again to Maciej for the phrase “Delay King,” which was used in his video thumbnail, which was so apt that I just had to include it in today’s title.
By the way, Maciej is literally playing Wes Borland’s old guitar in that YouTube video (!). He bought it on eBay when Wes was moving. Just knowing that adds a very surreal kind of intimacy to the whole medley. It’s kind of like hearing echoes through a rockstar’s relic.
Anyway excitement aside, I really enjoyed this quiet delayed rediscovery into guitar riffs that I didn’t even know existed.
I’ll have to keep going to see what else I may have missed 🎸🥁
