Today I’m talking about something I’ve learned about myself over the past few years: I learn best in micro steps.
Tiny chunks. Bite‑sized pieces.
This became especially clear when I tried learning basic SQL several times. Every time I opened a forty‑page tutorial or a four‑hour lecture, my brain would just glaze over.
It’s not that the material wasn’t thorough, it’s just too dense for how my mind absorbs new skills.
And no, it’s not because I’m scrolling TikTok all day. I’m mostly on YouTube, which is in some ways maybe worse or more addictive, but still!
What’s funny is that this wasn’t how I learned growing up. I went through the Singapore school system, which was kind of memorization‑heavy at the time, and I did fine in most subjects.
The one exception was Mandarin, and honestly, anything language‑related has always been a challenge for me.
These days, I’ve fully embraced my micro‑learning approach.
I recently bought a pocket art book called Figure Drawing: The Quick Guide to Mastering Technique and Style by Miss Led, also known as Joanna Henly.
I’ve tried learning figure drawing several times before and didn’t really succeed every time, so I’m hoping this small, structured guide will finally click for me.
That’s today’s reflection: learning in tiny, manageable steps works better for me than trying to swallow a whole textbook at once.
And honestly, it feels good to finally accept that.
