Day 23 — My YouTube + Microcast Setup

Today I’m talking about my actual setup: the very unglamorous, very functional tools I use for both YouTube and my microcast.

Nothing fancy, nothing optimized, just what works for me.

YouTube Setup: Point‑and‑Shoot

My YouTube setup is basically one phone.

Point and shoot. That’s it.

I don’t have the time, patience, or desire to upgrade equipment right now.

I like that my phone is lightweight and fast — especially because I film a lot of nature and hiking videos, and Maine’s terrain can be unpredictable.

Even if I’m not going deep into the woods, the weather can shift in under 30 seconds.

For editing, I use Canva for simple cuts and light audio tweaks.

If I need extra sound, I pull from the YouTube Audio Library or Freesound.

It’s minimal, but it does exactly what I need.

Microcast Setup: Low‑Friction

My microcast setup is equally simple:

  • Laptop
  • Voice Memo app
  • Bose headset
  • Usually one take
  • Warm water with honey if my voice feels dry
  • And my cat Meowzer, who is almost always nearby like a tiny audio engineer

For editing, I use GarageBand for light cleanup.

And honestly…that’s it.

I like setups that don’t get in my way. If the barrier to recording is too high, I won’t do it.

This simple, reliable workflow lets me focus on the part that matters (the voice, the story, the atmosphere) without getting stuck in as-yet-unnecessary tech upgrades (!!) or perfectionism.
