Recently I posted some historical photos on my 25‑plus‑year‑old website, Dragonsinn.
These were dragon altar cloths from Peranakan culture, a unique Southeast Asian culture from the region I grew up in. Seeing those images again made me think about having my own altar cloths for creative and at‑home purposes.
Being the frugal creature that I am, I decided to explore dragon‑themed fabric swatches instead of buying full altar cloths. I wanted something atmospheric, something that could double as a tarot cloth or a creative desk covering. These fabric swatches delivered far more than I expected.
I filmed a short video on a winter morning (hoping to upload quite soon) and wrote a draft blog post on Dragonsinn about the whole process.
I think of these cloths as creative altar cloths. Like small, mythic backdrops I can lay my cards on, or use when I want my space to feel a little more symbolic or ceremonial.
They add a beautiful layer of color and texture to my creative environment.
If I manage to move successfully this year (still aiming to relocate within Maine), I’m looking forward to taking them out more often and building a small series around them.
